DSM Chemicals fined for environmental violations
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - An Augusta-based chemical company will pay $800,000 in fines to resolve allegations it underreported its toxic releases by millions of pounds from 2003 to 2006.
In a consent order with Georgia's Environmental Protection
Division, DSM Chemicals North America, Inc. admits to no specific violations.
But the company has agreed to undertake three "environmental improvement projects'' and invest $1.2 million on new pollution control equipment.
Company president David Quester says resolving the emissions issue will also allow DSM to restart a portion of the plant idled last year. The restart will include adding 80 additional employees after 220 positions were lost during a 2009 downsizing.
