Program helps Augusta's homeless get on their feet

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Homelessness is a growing problem not only across the country, but also in Augusta.

"I made the decision to try to find a shelter so I can get back on my feet," said one of the residents in the program.

Those words are from a mother who lost everything, but found a place of hope.

"Interfaith Hospitality Network of Augusta is a homeless shelter for families that are homeless," said Sarah MacDonald, director of the Augusta site. "You have to be homeless and have children."

The 30-day program includes finding a job and a place to live for the homeless. On Central Avenue is the day center where families can have a place for their children to play, wash clothes and search the Internet for jobs.

This mother had nowhere to turn, but after joining this program she found help in more ways than one.

"My problem with my family is I wanted to job search but no one wanted to watch my daughter for me," said one resident. "If I got a job, I would still need first paycheck before I could put her in a day care. This program offers day care, it's already handled."

Interfaith Hospitality's main goal is to help you and your family get back on your feet, everything from day care to interview training, and even transportation.

"Our main goal is to provide for all of their needs," said MacDonald. "And we do that by anything that you could imagine. From toothpaste to fixing your car. Their main focus is to get back on their feet and get that job and save their money."

So now with the help of this program this mom and many others can prepare to provide for their family.

"When you leave, our goal is for you to be self sufficient and that you can make it on your own. And most families are. We are not just a shelter; we provide everything for them that gives them the motivation to want to be self sufficient," said MacDonald.
