AUGUSTA, Ga. - Richmond County Coroner's Office has identified the victim in the shooting on 6th Avenue.

Charles Rodriquez Harris, 41, was shot and killed after investigators say he was caught breaking into someone's home. The coroner's office says he's body was sent the the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta for an autospy. Harris died from a gunshot wound to the back and abdomen.

Investigators say Harris died at MCGHealth Tuesday morning. Deputies tell NBC Auugusta 26 News a man was leaving a neighboring home and saw the front door of the home was open, so he went to check on the house.

That's when Harris walked out of the home with several items. Investigators say after making several attempts to try to stop Harris, the man fired two shots, one of which killed the burglar.

Investigators say jewelry was found in his pockets from another break-in earlier Tuesday morning.

Deputies spoke with the shooter, who has been released. Right now, charges have not been filed against him. Investigators will present the case to the District Attorney's Office, who will decide whether to present it to a grand jury.

We're told Harris is also known as Marquet Jones. The coroner is trying to locate his family. If you have any information call the Richmond County Coroner's Office at (706) 821-1080.
